Leading European MINI tuning specialist,1320, is delighted to launch a brand new ‘plug and play’ fully mappable ECU that’s designed to suit any 1st generation supercharged, turbocharged or normally aspirated BMW MINI. Called the ‘EC2,’ it’s been developed in conjunction with a leading motorsport ECU manufacturer for Cambridgeshire based 1320.

The idea behind the plug and play EC2 ECU was to develop a powerful, high performance, cost effective, easy to install engine management system that works in parallel with the original BMW MINI drive by wire throttle and dashboard functions.

Use of the EC2 ECU enables 1320’s customers to totally control the key engine parameters for extensively tuned MINI engines, offering more precise and reliable control than a simple reflash OBD remap of the original Bosch ECU. For example the EC2 ECU allows individual ignition and fuelling control on each cylinder, a very useful feature on highly tuned MINI’s that venture onto the circuit or drag strip.

The 1320 EC2 plug and play ECU for the BMW MINI adds numerous additional electronic functions which are ideally suited for fast road, trackday, racing, Time Attack or drag racing use, including WRC style launch control, two stage boost control (for turbocharger conversions) shift light control, flat shift functions and data logging.

1320’s Generation 1 MINI Plug and Play EC2 ECU user features include:-

  • 1320 Plug and play EC2 is compatible with any 1st generation BMW MINI
  • EC2 ECU is configured to run the original ECU, coolant, fuel gauge, tacho and warning lights in the BMW MINI dashboard
  • OEM MINI traction control function remains but the EC2 ECU removes the annoying zero throttle effect that is characteristic of the standard Bosch ECU when it detects wheelspin
  • Engine RPM limiter function includes a feature that’s relative to engine temperature to avoid over revving if the engine is cold
  • Full atmospheric and cold start fuel corrections. Allows for fast and accurate starting whatever the conditions, including enabling the engine to operate at any altitude or atmospheric condition
  • Individual ignition timing adjustment on each cylinder
  • Individual fuelling adjustment on each cylinder
  • Launch control
  • Advanced boost control (for turbocharger converted engines)
  • Switch from low boost to high boost (turbocharged engines only)
  • Pit lane speed limiter – control the speed at which the ECU will reduce torque output in order to hold vehicle speed steady at this speed during pitlane entrances and exits
  • Idle control strategies are provided as standard with full environmental ignition and fuel corrections
  • Set temperature for when the cooling fan relay is turned on / off
  • Set gear shift lamp on – engine RPM at which the gearshift lamp is turned on / off
  • Set flat shift gear cut time – The time in milliseconds during which the ECU enters torque reduction for gear cut mode when the gear cut switch is made.
  • The EC2 ECU’s data log book provides min/max and time spent at/above values for a variety of parameters. It also stores the 5 highest engine speeds attained to allow quick identification of engine over rev.

1320’s Generation 1 MINI Plug and Play EC2 ECU key technical features include:-
  • 32 X 32 Fuel and Ignition tables with programmable break points allow accurate calibration of ignition and fuel injection events to optimise engine performance, idle quality and transient throttle response
  • CAN 2.0B communication for dash display, data logging and calibration (USB & Bluetooth CAN adaptors available). Modern comms standard employed by all OEM's makes supplying engine data to a dash or Data logger easy. Support for EC2 available in Cosworth, Pi, AIM, Motec, Race Technology and Race Logic products
  • A 32 bit Motorola main processor which provides class leading processing power. Its fully surface-mounted PCB and IP65 rated enclosures ensures the upmost reliability, even in the harshest of operating conditions
  • Un-used injector drivers can be used as auxiliary outputs. All input/outputs are user configurable via the calibration software
  • EC2 is housed in a fluid resistant IP65 rated enclosure with reverse voltage and over voltage protection. Sensor supply and ground pins are also protected against shorts
  • EC2 is able to interface directly with a number of paddle shift/semi-automatic gear controllers via CAN or voltage input to provide a controlled torque reduction for gear up shift requests
  • EC2 maintains crank sync even under low and uneven cranking speeds e.g. low battery charge, high compression normally aspirated engines etc
  • Input any linear map sensor, for users requiring a 4.0 Bar item on high boost turbocharged engines
  • Data logging function presented in 5 different gauge pages for recording, playing back or exporting as a .csv
